What Is Barre Fit Pilates

What is Barre Fit Pilates? The Barre fitness craze is in full swing! With clients experiencing extreme and rapid changes in as little as 10 classes, the word, “addicted” is an understatement! If you’ve experienced a class, chances are you’re now a loyal Barre groupie. If you haven’t, here’s what to expect.

Origins: Barre classes were originally developed by ballet dancer, Lotte Berk over 30 years ago. However, the concept has recently witnessed a surge of popularity and can now be found in franchises, small studios, and health clubs across the U.S. and internationally. While there are several interpretations of the method, most classes follow a similar format and utilize the same props.

Philosophy: The Barre philosophy combines ballet-inspired techniques, Pilates, and Yoga to create a total body workout.  Barre exercises primarily rely upon one's bodyweight for resistance and are performed at small ranges of motion that target the thighs, hips, glutes, arms, and abs. In addition to noticeable transformations to the physique, clients also experience improved balance, strength, stamina, posture, and flexibility.

Class Length & Format: Classes range from 50 – 60 minutes in length and include a 10 – 15 minute warm-up using light weights (no more than 1 - 5 lbs.) that target the triceps, biceps, upper back, shoulders, and chest. Approximately 25 minutes is spent performing ballet-inspired exercises either at the Barre or on the mat targeting the thighs, hips, and glutes. Classes also include an intense abdominal focus, planks, push-ups, a cool down, and a sprinkle of stretching segments are conducted throughout the class to create long and lean muscles.

Most classes are set to upbeat music from various music genres, which provides a fun and motivating class experience. The hour will literally be over before you know it!

Props & Attire: Barre classes are conducted using a ballet barre that is anchored to a wall.  Light free weights, a small playground ball, a mat and occasionally bands and yoga straps are also used. The entire class is performed without the use of shoes. However, most studios will require students to wear ankle socks that have “grips” on the sole of the foot. Non Slip Socks are typically worn for three purposes:

1.To insulate body heat;

2. For hygiene purposes and/or

3. To create friction between the foot and either the carpet or wood flooring (depending on the studio).

Class Levels: Most Barre classes are considered all-level and are open to various fitness levels and abilities. Some studios, however, offer introductory and advanced level classes.

Create a Balanced Body: Since Barre classes are performed at small ranges of motion, I believe it’s important to incorporate fitness disciplines in which require the body to move in full ranges of motion to create a balanced workout routine. I recommend Mat and/or equipment-based Pilates sessions.

The practice of Pilates will provide a more intense Barre workout as Pilates demands a strong sense of body awareness. Possessing this body awareness during a Barre class will help secure correct muscle engagement, locate your hardest working position quickly, and reach fatigue sooner! In turn, you’ll increase stamina and strength all while keeping you free from injury. And of course you’ll notice amazing changes to your physique too!
